LABOR UNIONS ENDORSE STEPHEN IVAIN FOR MAYOR OF TORRINGTON

Torrington, CT, October 21, 2021 – Stephen Ivain, the democratic candidate for mayor of Torrington, has received endorsements from six unions representing police, fire, healthcare, construction, and maintenance workers. Ivain, who is running on a pledge to cut the city’s property taxes by attracting new businesses to Torrington, is the first mayoral candidate in more than a decade to receive endorsements from all six of these unions.

“Throughout the pandemic, many of these professionals have risked their health and, often, their very lives to protect and serve the people of Torrington,” Ivain said. “I am extremely honored to have their support for my campaign and am committed to putting the city of Torrington back on a path to prosperity.”

The unions endorsing Ivain include the Connecticut Uniformed Professional Firefighters Association;

New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199; Civil State Employees Association, CSEA SEIU Local 2001; Western Connecticut Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO; Connecticut Employees Union Independent, CEUI Local 511; and the Connecticut State Building Trades Council. All told, these unions represent thousands of Torrington-area residents.

“The city of Torrington is losing too many well-trained police and fire professionals to cities that provide better pay and benefit packages,” Ivain said. “We have lost 10 police officers since 2018 and nine firefighters since 2009, including the chief. We cannot afford to keep losing highly qualified professionals that keep our residents safe. If I am elected mayor on November 2, I will find a viable and affordable solution to our retention problem.”

Ivain earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematical Science from Connecticut College. He has worked for more than 25 years as a senior business manager at Fortune 500 companies in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He is a third-generation resident of Torrington and lives in town with his wife, who is a teacher at Forbes. They have three grown children.
